ALTEA PHOTOS - ALTEA OLD TOWN, ALTEA PROMENADE, PORT

Costa Blanca Property

These photos were taken in February and show you more of Altea and it's urban areas with it's attractive hill top old town and new Altea Hills urbanization and Luis Campomanes sports harbour. Altea comprises of sunny hill side urbanizations on the east side of the town with a long curving bay lined with low rise beachfront apartments. Click on the link if you want to see a specific urbanization.

Altea Town and Urbanizations: Altea Old Town, Altea Promenade, Altea Port   Altea la Vieja, Don Cayo Golf, Sierra de Altea, Galera del Mar, Galera de las Palmeras  Altea Hills, Luis Campomanes Sports Harbour, Pueblo Mascarat   Altea Urlisa I,II,III, Villa Marina Golf, Alahama Springs

Altea Town showing the long seafront lined with apartments, the old town with it's hilltop church and the Sierra Bernia mountain range in the background. Altea has the largest street market on the Costa Blanca which is certainly worth a visit and is located on the promenade on the left of the picture every Tuesday from 8.30am to 1.00pm. On market day the plentiful seafront bars and restaurants are all full. Try the very rustic Bodegón de Pepe that has been specialising in delicious steamed mussels and fried sardines since at least the 1950's. enlarge

Altea Church and Church Square. Plaza de la Iglesia. Ancient narrow cobbled streets lead up through the old town to the church square at the top of the hill overlooked by the church with it's famous blue tiled dome. All sorts of craft workshops and galleries line these streets along with plentiful restaurants and bars. You could try the El Negro restaurant for a fine Argentinean steak in one of the original town houses just off the church square to the left. Since the 1960's Altea has had a name as a town devoted to the arts staging festivals and having many resident artists with their studios. enlarge

A terrace off the Plaza de la Iglesia offers fine views over Altea town, the harbour and Albir in the distance (see the photo below). Many of the old Altea town houses have this same view and have been renovated or are undergoing renovation while respecting the traditional style. They can be quite roomy but you may need to find a parking in Altea new town some distance away. enlarge

Beachfront apartments extend along Altea promenade and the long pebble beach towards Albir being popular as second residences with visitors from Madrid and the north of Spain. The N332 runs through the town as does the railway with its three Altea stations. A by pass round the town is in the planning stage and will probably follow the route of the existing A7 motorway.  enlarge

Altea Port. Altea has two harbours. The one in the photo is the old fishing harbour although it has a large area devoted to sports boats and yachts. The other is the newer Luis Campomanes Sports Harbour towards the Calpe side of Altea and facing the Pueblo Mascarat development with it's impressive collection of luxury yachts. In general the Northern Costa Blanca is short of moorings with both Campomanes and Calpe's Puerto Blanco planning to be extended. Altea port offers 369 berths of which 185 are for visitors. The fishing boats occupy the far end of the harbour wall with their storage houses and offices. enlarge

Altea Promenade. Altea has a long and popular seafront promenade with all the bars and restaurants having nice open air terraces. On summer evenings Altea artists set up along the promenade wall towards the centre of the town (by the sea wall parking) and sell their paintings, take commissions and will do you a self portrait straight away if you wish. The palm lined promenade continues along towards Albir village and there are plans to have it following the beach for the whole way. enlarge

New development in Altea is taking place for the most part towards the Calpe side of the town with attractive squares and low rise apartments. A major development further on towards La Olla beach is Villa Gadea with it's seafront bungalows and Pueblo Mascarat beside Luis Campomanes sports harbour. The boutiques and design shops that Altea is known for are well represented on this side of town. enlarge
